This list represents many of the resources and organisations we relied upon during our research or who we have come across over the years.

Even if you aren’t in the same country as many of these organisations, the majority of their websites have incredible resources. These resources can be accessed and applied in your own workplace, wherever you are in the world.

Highly respected organisation, set up by the UK Government in 2001, focussed on helping reduce carbon emissions, saving money and developing commercial low carbon technologies. They provide the business (and public sector) with expert advice, finance and accreditation. Their site offers a large amount of information as well as grant and loan opportunities.

This organisation requests climate change information from 475 institutional investors, 35 purchasing organisations and UK government bodies and 3,700 corporations to help organisations measure, manage and reduce emissions and climate change impacts.

A US based, national network of investors, environmental organisations and other public interest groups who work with companies and investors to address sustainability challenges. They bring stakeholders together to encourage companies and capital markets to incorporate environmental and social challenges into their day-to-day decision-making. They launched the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

Developed by Business in the Community and open to companies in the UK of all sizes and sectors, this national mark is rigorous. It provides an independent assessment of how a business invests in and works with its local communities, including scrutiny by its employees and community partners.

Ecology and Environment

An organisation that provides advice on how to reduce energy consumption through energy checks, travel arrangements, employee engagement and the use of energy efficient appliances. The Trust offers advice on relevant grants and loans; many of the services are free of charge.

Environmental Defense Fund

A leading US based, national non-profit organisation that partners with business, governments and communities to work towards sustainable solutions. They link science, economics and law to create innovative, equitable and cost-effective solutions. They work with companies on partnerships that deliver environmental results, benefit businesses and change industries.

Fair Trade Foundation

A charity/non-profit organisation that includes 24 global organisations working towards improving the welfare of producers in the developing world through a certification programme. Goods certified by Fair Trade act as a guarantee that producers are getting a fair deal on their goods. Many resources are available online including details of their Fair trade certification programme.

Friends of the Earth International

A charity/non-profit and international organisation that operates in 77 countries and is dedicated to protecting the environment and engendering higher environmental awareness. Grassroots oriented, they campaign on today’s most urgent environmental and social issues and promote solutions that will help to create environmentally sustainable and socially just societies.

An organisation that aims to encourage the responsible management of forests through a certification programme. Website offers information on companies that hold certification and free online resources on FSC certification and forestry – including publications, presentations and facts.

Forum for the Future

A UK based sustainable development organisation that offers practical, solutions-based advice to businesses and local authorities on how to improve sustainability performance. They publish a monthly environmental issues magazine ‘Green Futures’ with several articles available for free online.

Their areas of expertise include business ethics, social marketing, environment and climate change and behaviour change. Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

A large multi-stakeholder network of thousands of experts, in dozens of countries worldwide, who participate in GRI’s working groups and governance bodies. The GRI is the most widely used sustainability reporting framework. The GRI provides principles and indicators that organisations use to measure and report on their economic, environmental, and social performance. Green Seal

A US based non-profit organisation, Green Seal provides environmental certification standards to help manufacturers, retailers, and consumers make responsible choices that positively impact business behaviour and improve quality of life.

Human Rights Watch

One of the world’s leading independent organisations dedicated to defending and protecting human rights. They conduct rigorous, objective investigations and strategic, targeted advocacy that increases action against human rights abuses. Their publications are available on their website alongside a range of multimedia articles.

Institute for Sustainable Communication
A US based non-profit that works with public and private sector organisations to increase eco-efficient collaboration and communication work flows. They offer outreach and education, research and analysis, and a mentoring program, to help organisations tackle sustainability issues that relate to the sustainability and carbon footprint of marketing campaigns and communication processes. Online resources include articles, reports, factoids, blogs on sustainability issues, event listings and a social network for youths.

A collaborative partnership of investment managers advised by non-governmental organisations that serve as an information source for companies. Through dialogue and shareholder resolutions, they encourage companies to adopt policies that reduce or eliminate toxic chemicals in their products. Strategic Sustainability Consulting

Sustainability consultancy that works with smaller, under-resourced businesses and non-profits to develop a sustainability plan, calculate their carbon footprint, identify ways to go carbon neutral, manage supply chains and develop a communications strategy. They offer green audits and also provide training programs that certify green auditors.

UN Global Compact
A United Nations voluntary initiative to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on their implementation.
This principles-based framework helps companies align to ten principles concerned with human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption. Free online publications available, including annual reviews, implementation guides and summit meeting reports.

A non-profit organisation dedicated to sustainable build, design and practice. Having developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), they provide information on the steps towards achieving green buildings as well as a green building certification program. Green building research is available on their website, alongside case studies and relevant government resources.

A campaigning organisation focussed on safeguarding the natural world by encouraging people to change how they live so that their activities are in harmony with nature. They work with local authorities, schools and businesses and provide a range of free publications on their site on a variety of environmental and social issues.
